Mindfulness for Schools

"The highest function of education is

to bring about an integrated individual who is capable of dealing with life as a whole"

- Krishnamurti

Kommodum Kids delivers two specialised mindfulness programmes

for schools:

1. The classroom-based mindfulness curriculum Paws b

by the Mindfulness in Schools Project

2. The Creative Mindfulness Kids Method (Mindful Heart Curriculum)

by Louise Shanagher (Creative Mindfulness®)

Creative Mindfulness

Creative Mindfulness

The Creative Mindfulness Programme encompasses the Mindful Heart Curriculum developed by Louise Shanagher and Paul McNamee. This curriculum introduces evidence-based mindfulness and self-compassion practices to children using fun, creative and child-friendly methods. The curriculum contains 10 lesson plans which can be adapted to suit age ranges from 5 - 12. The curriculum can be delivered over a course of 8-10 weeks in a classroom or after-school club setting.

Creative Expression

  • The Creative Mindfulness Kids Method employs creative and engaging strategies to introduce mindfulness concepts to children. Through art, craft, and storytelling, children can explore their thoughts and express their emotions.

2

Meditation and Visualisation

  • The programme incorporates a variety of mindfulness meditations and visualisation practices tailored to children's developmental stages. These practices help children calm their minds, increase self-awareness, and cultivate self-regulation techniques.

3

Interactive Discussions

  • Interactive discussions and group activities are an important part of the Creative Mindfulness programme to encourage children to express their thoughts and feelings in a safe and supportive environment. These discussions promote understanding, discovering our 'common humanity' and effective communication among children.

4

Engaging Stories

The use of engaging stories and narratives makes mindfulness concepts more relatable and accessible to children. Within the Creative Mindfulness programme, the stories often include characters and situations that help children grasp and apply mindfulness principles.

Paws b

Paws b is a 6-12 session, classroom-based curriculum for children aged 7 -11. It is offered formally as a series of lessons which often sit well within a PSHE curriculum, and informally through integrating the learning and practice of mindfulness in all subjects and extra-curricular activities.

Neuroscience

  • Specific areas of the brain and how these affect our ability to focus, make good choices, recognise when we need to steady ourselves when our body or mind is busy or out of balance.

2

Self-Regulation

  • Ways that mindfulness can support us in many day-to-day activities, including concentration and memory, behavioural self-management, and in relationships with family and friends.

3

Emotional Literacy & Interconnectedness

  • Ways to respond rather than react – and therefore make better choices and take best care of ourselves and others.

4

Stress Reduction

Learning to step back and find a steady place in our minds in order to develop manageable strategies for reducing stress and anxiety.
